There was tension in the air at the culmination of a fine days golf at Pine Ridge. Many Titans were expecting to win as player after player carded scores better than their handicaps. The fast running conditions meant that Pine Ridge was defenceless against the sustained attacks of the Titans straight driving elite.
Of the 24 men playing, an astonishing 21 scored above 30, 15 shot their handicap or better, and 8 shot in the 40’s. Surely these eight had high hopes of winning? Will S and Paul T were quietly confident but Matt Dawes knew that this was his last chance for Super Titan stardom. Were it not for the fact that we know his golfing pedigree(!) then some might be calling him a Australian bandit (Ned Kelly?) because he carded a score of 50 points! This has got to be one of the highest ever points score in Titans history. Well done Matt.
Commiserations go to Will (44 pts) and Paul (43 pts) who on another day would surely have won. Congratulations also to Carmine who won the ladies event with 39 pts.
In an early morning Sky Sports interview Pine Ridge announced their plans to cope with the threat now posed by Mr Dawes in particular. They propose to remodel and lengthen the course – to “Dawes proof it”. The bill of £1m to be paid by the Titans Invitational. The Titans IOC commented that after intense overnight negotiations with Crown Golf it has been decided instead to deport Mr Dawes back to Oz this winter. Mr Dawes declined to comment but had a very smug smile on his face.
