Greg McErlean's sister, Catherine O'Donnell, qualified for this major amateur event in May and then beat 160 other golfers on Sunday to win the senior all Ireland women's championship at Woodbrook golf club just outside Dublin.
But in an interview with the Irish Times yesterday proud brother Greg revealed the true secret of her success - "l helped Catherine prepare for her big day by playing multiple games with her in the preceding weeks. I concentrated on particular parts of her game by demonstrating to her the shots that she should definitely avoid in the final:
1) The dreaded shank
2) the low flying bunker shot and especially
3) the 260 yard drive to the trees.
Undoubtedly this was a major factor in her win. The family are immensely proud."
However sources closer to the Champ suggest that it may be more to do with her fine sporting heritage as she was also an All Ireland winning Camogie champion in her youth! For those non Irish people out there this is a Gaelic game that looks like aerial team golf!
And in other news:
- the lady Titans chief talent scout is rumoured to be discussing a six figure sum if Catherine signs for the Ladies "Rest of the World" team and
- Greg has been spotted warming up for Sunday's Team Matchplay grudge match against Andrew Cooke by tramping through woodland in Richmond Park.
