A happy duo after some mixed golf. Nina and Philip Campbell managed a smile or two at Dukes earlier to-day. The rain stayed off and it was a pleasant morning that saw more birdies than usual - eight in total. Great to see Azim back on the golfing trail and Kevin G with a 'very close' Nearest-the-Pin. The foreshortened trophy is a story for another day! There were more high scoring antics in Hoebridge today. James McIntyre scored his third 40 pointer in a row to finish third. Martin wyn (note small w) Griffith had a fine 43 points and must be wondering what he has to do to win. But the runaway winner was Titans journeyman Greg McErlean who scorched around in an embarrassing 47 points.
So great a shock was it to his family that they put the bunting out in St. Albans. Thousands of people lined the streets of St. Albans to cheer him home. The banner says "WINNER". In two weeks it will be "LOSER"! Titans IOU's for balls were handed out for the bonus holes as nobody brought them. Sorry Greg, Will, Andrew and James. Shockingly no one won the money hole. 135 yards only and no one found the green. Winning prize of 40 points at Wycombe Heights if you can suggest what the dog is saying! Well the new Tour Director (Mike Rubber) has really shaken the schedule up in a great way. Some nice courses have gone out but some great ones have come in. Starting with Kingswood on the 9th March, the new courses keep coming. I'm really excited about The Shire on the 18 May and Caversham Heath on 15th June. Surrey National on the 27th July, Maidenhead on the 24 August and Gatton Manor on the 21 September bring the total up to 7 new courses. But don't despair because the old favourites are still there - Old Thorns, Pyrford and of course our spiritual home - Pine Ridge.
What a great tour awaits - Check out the new calendar here. Click on the course name for some additional information about the courses. Roll on 2014. Alan and Greg flew into Belfast and travelled down the Ards peninsula for a few days of Northern Ireland links golf. First up was the wonderfull Ardglass which is reckoned to be the 8th best course in NI. Playing off the whites it offered significant challenges for the two titans. Gregs use of a mulligan at the first didn't auger well for his round. 6 lost balls later he accepted defeat! Beautiful course with great sea views on most holes. After a relaxing night out in portaferry (3 pubs, 8/9 pints of the black stuff and a pub lockin till 1pm) the groggy titans played the 9 hole Ardminnin. Not a classic course but littered with hazards. Another 5 lost balls for Greg and another victory for the imperious Alan. The only consolation for Greg was a great eagle attempt on the par 5 8th. The 20ft putt hit the back of the cup, hopped up and sat 1" from the hole! even Greg couldn't miss the birdie attempt. Kirkiston Castle was next. 12th best course in NI and a beautifully presented course. After a good start from Greg, Alan powered on to record an impressive victory. The par 4 10th would test any Titan. 440 yards with the approach being made up a huge hill to a tiny green. the titans shirts were on show. Recovery that night in Fiddlers Green pub - music, Guinness and Portaferry's 20 something women dressed up and towering over their boyfriends on 9" heels! There was tension in the air at the culmination of a fine days golf at Pine Ridge. Many Titans were expecting to win as player after player carded scores better than their handicaps. The fast running conditions meant that Pine Ridge was defenceless against the sustained attacks of the Titans straight driving elite. Of the 24 men playing, an astonishing 21 scored above 30, 15 shot their handicap or better, and 8 shot in the 40’s. Surely these eight had high hopes of winning? Will S and Paul T were quietly confident but Matt Dawes knew that this was his last chance for Super Titan stardom. Were it not for the fact that we know his golfing pedigree(!) then some might be calling him a Australian bandit (Ned Kelly?) because he carded a score of 50 points! This has got to be one of the highest ever points score in Titans history. Well done Matt. Commiserations go to Will (44 pts) and Paul (43 pts) who on another day would surely have won. Congratulations also to Carmine who won the ladies event with 39 pts. In an early morning Sky Sports interview Pine Ridge announced their plans to cope with the threat now posed by Mr Dawes in particular. They propose to remodel and lengthen the course – to “Dawes proof it”. The bill of £1m to be paid by the Titans Invitational. The Titans IOC commented that after intense overnight negotiations with Crown Golf it has been decided instead to deport Mr Dawes back to Oz this winter. Mr Dawes declined to comment but had a very smug smile on his face. The rain held off (just) and there were even a few birdies at Dukes on Saturday the 7th. Smiles all round as Jenny moves into second place and gets ever closer to knocking Annabelle off the top of the Ladies leaderboard. Will's seven points takes him ever further ahead of THE PREZ (sunning himself in Portugal). Will Will's holiday plans (weeks away yet again!) give Frank the opportunity to get to the top |
