Another Wyn Griffith smash and grab, Gee's delight and Lee crowned 2016 Titans Tour Champion

The two champions - Martalan Wyn Leegriffith
The tour finale at Harleyford was a tense affair where the bacon butties surprisingly disappointed, the Wyn-ning Welsh wizard did his usual smash & grab, Meryll Gee won the Ladies event and the noisy celebrations of yet another modern day Irish golfing superstar were almost drowned out by the sobs of the golfer who was second place on the day and therefore second place in the annual men's rankings.

Yes - Martin Wyn Griffith did his customary Titans Major ram-raid by flying in on his Learjet, direct from one weeks intensive preparation at the Butch Harmon School of Golf in Florida. Never in the history of the Titans has £10k been spent so productively as he went on to shoot 31 points to win his second major of the year.

But spare a thought for poor Sam Dunkley. Money talks and Sam could only afford to spend £250 at the month long Jean van de Velde school of golfing disasters in Margate. He would have topped the 2016 leaderboard if he had come first in the Ray Kalnins and he came really, really close to achieving that - equal with Martin W-G in total on 31 points and on the back 9. The count back went to the  last 6 and Martin won. Paul Tennant picked up 3rd place with 30 points and that propelled him to 4th place in the annual ranking.

So it was tragedy for Sam but delight for Alan Lee who must have been worrying that his 22 points would lose him the Titans crown he has threatened to win for many years. But it was not to be - he was not to be denied.  Congratulations to Alan. 2016 Tour Champion.

And what of  "Second Place Phil" I hear you say?  Yes he was in second place overall but plummeted down the list (to 3rd!) after a spectacular 20 points was amassed. Nevertheless he did manage to have two good shots in the round winning longest drive and a bottle of champagne on the 16th!

Disappointed Sam won NP and the Prez won NP2 (presumably no presidential moans about selection of that one!).  Last years champion Tod did not have such a stellar year this year but did manage to salvage some pride by winning the last LD of the year.

Charitable Pat Carr (so named originally because he gives so many shots back to the course) gave back his £20 winnings on the Money Hole to go £10 to each of the Par 3 charities - The Upper Room and the RNLI. Charitable in so many ways. That lad has Titans spirit oozing out of him!

This is what inebriated Titans look like in their natural habitat
The Titans guest prize is usually a ball and a presidential slap on the back - not often reported on the back page. However this time it was an amazing contest. Chris Kershaw would have won the RK trophy but for still being a guest. Another guest, Mark Straker, would have been in with a shout on 33 - the winning total - although count back would have placed him 4th. The young guns may be about to threaten the crusty old codgers in future years.

What a great year it has been:
  • Tod Lockard captained us superbly throughout the year and ever introduced us to Donald Trump on Captains Day.  And on that famous day we were introduced to those famous stars and stripes shorts.  Many of you will probably be thinking "thank goodness I'll never see those shorts again".  If you are thinking this then the Chiswick Police would like to speak to you because they were stolen from Tod's car last week. Police are also looking for 124 lost golf balls, three Titans trophies and that long lost swing.
  • The IOC exuded IOCness throughout the year and served up a fantastic championship with magnificent new courses. They also managed to pick up the tour championship, 4 individual tour events and one major - there is life in the old boys yet.
  • The Rest of the World team slaughtered the English team (again)
  • And finally - Harleyford just missed out on the inaugural "Titans Bacon Buttie of the Year" award with a disappointing final round and the 2016 award goes to the Shire.
PS - apologies to the ladies for the appalling coverage of the ladies event in the above article but the author wasn't at the event and hasn't got any info to go on!

To be pipped by Executive Jet was wormwood and gall - but my sobbing was not in Olympics Taekwondo league. I will have to check out the Netjets website for next year.

Well done to Alan "Djokovic" Lee who held the #1 slot so long. Like Andy Murray.I will just have to try harder next year. Thanks to all the IOC for a great Tour, and to Prez for ditto end of season speech

"Classy and scenic " Harleyford underperformed on the food this time, but throws off the rain like a duck's back. Here's hoping it (snd Temple) make the cut for next year. PS this link to their interesting greenkeepers blog shows how much work goes on "behind the scenes" - http://harleyfordcourseupdates.blogspot.co.uk/
