A smorgasbord of prizes, an American proposes a wall and the Presidents love-in. The 2017 Titan’s season has begun.

Red arrow points to the winner
What a day was had on Sunday. The Weather God Ospalla wasn’t well enough to be with us but he requested special weather for the opening event and he delivered. And so 29 Titans set out on a new season – full of hope and expectation. And what did the first tee drives tell us? Nina managed to plop her first drive somewhere by Guilford but she made up by hitting a monster drive on the Long Drive hole. The Prez also posted a serious statement of intent by hitting a 280 yard monster to the edge of the green (Ed – Are you sure this is right?). And 2016 Runner up Sam Dunkley bravely tried to soldier on with a bad back and duly smashed his drive 230 yards straight down the middle.

And especially for this Founders events we were graced by the presence of two of the original Founders who have played with us regularly for a while. The Moan Meisters (Duncan Deacon) return appeared to send Pat Carr into handicap apoplexy whereas the return of Ally Arrossi sent the Titans ladies into a swoon (Ed – Are you sure this is right?).

Out on the course Pine Ridge was in reasonable condition for the time of year and play was smooth. The pines did come into play however and the trio of Tennant, Ward and McErlean seemed to always place their balls behind the nearest tree. (Ed – Are you sure we can print this?) Fellow player Sabina de Marca just found the fairway every time perfectly illustrating to the guys that the idea is to use their woods to put the ball on the fairway not to put it in the woods from the fairway.

Trump rants, Moan Meister and Prez chuckle and Phil cracks up. Brilliant end to a brilliant captaincy
But the real fun of the day was the post match award giving and the announcement of the new Men’s Captain. The outgoing Captain America Tod Lockhard (Yes – he who invited Trump to the Captains Day) gave a very entertaining and highly political speech to conclude his tenure. He used his position of privilege to lambast the current establishment – invoking his hero Trump to allege that respected Titans Blogger McErlean was writing “fake news” (Ed – How did he find out about our planned article about Californian golfers faking handicap certificates?). He also accused the IOC about planning to get the Ladies Titans to fund the building of a wall on the right hand side of the 1st fairway at Pine Ridge to stop McErlean hitting it onto the 5th tee (again). Controversial stuff but the crowd was loving it. However eventually his austro-bavarian tirade concluded to rounds of laughter and applause and it was time for the Prez to announce the 2017 Captain -Sam (bad back) Dunkley. Sam took up the political challenge and in references to Brexit and by invoking Farage he promised to move the Titans even more to the right. (Ed – I thought that we were supposed to be a social organisation?)

Emma receives the winners salver from Nina and Fay
But when the frivolity and laughter abated we got down to the serious stuff. The Ladies winners were announced and the Prez demanded his feudal right to a hug and a kiss as they came to accept their prizes. Rita had to be dragged up to accept her prize by a handbag toting Ally. Emma Bunting won the Ladies Competition.

And for the men there were 8 prizes to announce and 12 placings. Proudest recipient was Azim who won his first ever Titans prize with a spectacular NP. Kam won the Lower handicappers LD and the higher handicappers prize was not won. Although Guest Jim Fish did have the best (only) shot to land on the fairway in this category. Sadly he doesn't win the dosh as a guest but did win the guest competition. Karl won the ££ and Deeks won the adulation of millions as he took NP2.

Ally shares the love
In the spirit of equality Prez was encouraged to give all the male winners a hug and a kiss with similar passion to that endured by the ladies. And so it became a very manly love-in. Diversity and equality won on the day.

And when the top three places were announced there were more shocks to be had:

  • In third place with 33pts was Greg "fake news" McErlean just beating Kam on countback
  • In second place was Greg's newest enemy - Tod "Trump-lite" Lockard with 35 points. (Ed - Greg smiled with the thought that Tod thus became the first beneficiary of the 2nd place 0.5 shot cut!)
  • And in First place, with BACK to BACK victories in the Founders was Captain Sam "Bad Back" Dunkley!! Unbelievable but true! Congratulations Sam.

It was a fantastic start to the year - this is not "fake news".

And finally - Alan found a blue Taylormade baseball cap on the table in the alcove. It has PSI and M1 on each side. If anyone lost it then contact Alan

And really finally - soft warm floury baps were filled with well done crispy smoked bacon. A quality Bacon Roll kicks off the season - 8/10

The Captain inauguration ceremony was just tremendous. In fact it was the most watched inauguration in Titan history. Titans are a finely-tuned machine. Captain Sam will carry on the good work and tirelessly defend golf in the spirit of fine fellowship and the extermination of fake news, and penal handicaps! Keep Titans' Great, again. - DJT
